Esteban de Dorantes
Estéban de Dorantes (c.1503–1539) was a Moorish slave with a significant role in the Spanish exploration of New Mexico. Estéban is said to have been born in Azemmour, Morocco around the year 1503. Robert Goodwin points out that "it was usual for a slave to be described in official documents as being from the place where he or she first became the property of a European slave merchant.
